Virgile Belaval was born in 1996 in Paris and now lives and works in Marseille.
After studying at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure d’Arts de Paris-Cergy between 2017 and 2020, he spent a residency at Buropolis in Marseille. His work mainly revolves around oil painting and drawing but he experiments with sculpture as well. He draws his inspiration from orthodox iconography or other mythologies that he distorts to create a personal imagery. The use of warm primary colours brings movement to his paintings with their vibrant compositions, at times disturbing, lying on the border between abstraction and figuration.
